The Mennonite Heritage Village
has developed an interpretive Summer Daycare/Daycamp Program based on
Mennonite pioneer life.
The focus of the program is a tour of the Village.
The children should be divided into groups of 15-20 per group before arrival,
with 2-3 adult supervisors accompanying each group.
The students will have an opportunity to experience how life was lived in a late nineteenth century Mennonite Village. Activities could include:
- Listen to a story (with large storyboard) of a pioneer family snowed in while inside their "semlin" (sod house)
- Enjoy a sample of schnetki(biscuit) and fresh rhubarb jam at the summer kitchen
- Experience using a slate/pencil at the Mennonite private school
- Visit the old Colony Church
- Stop at the windmill and observe the miller at work
- Watch the blacksmith make horse shoes and/or nails
- Watch the printer at the Printery
- Go on a wagon ride with oxen or horses
Break for lunch at our Livery
Barn Restaurant (menu enclosed) or bring a picnic lunch. Outside picnic
tables provided.
After the tour the children may visit the old-time General Store and purchase
small souvenirs, lollipops, or candy. They might also wish to visit the
farm animals at the Red Barn.
The Summer Daycare/Daycamp Program will be offered from July 2 to August 29.
Admission for the summer program is $3.50 for children.
Go on a wagon ride with oxen or horses...$0.50 additional charge per person.
