Dear Early Grades Teacher:

The Mennonite Heritage Village offers a winter program based upon the Manitoba  Social Studies Curriculum to students/teachers in the early grades. "The Mennonites: Then and Now" meets criteria for General Learning Outcomes,  C, I, D, L, T, G.

Dressed in vests and aprons to depict the simple wardrobe of the early Mennonites, the students explore the life of Mennonite immigrants from a child's perspective. The day's activities emphasize the role of a pioneer Mennonite child within the family and community.

Five areas are highlighted: Migration, Home, Work, Play and School. Each class should be divided into five groups before arrival, with one adult supervisor accompanying each group. These groups proceed from station to station, each of which has "hands-on" activities available for the students. Every student has the opportunity to do all of the following activities:

  • Listen to a story (with large illustrations) of a pioneer family snowed in while inside their "Semlin" (sod house)
  • Pack a trunk with replica items for a Mennonite immigrant family moving from Russia to Manitoba in 1874
  • Use slates and slate-pencils in a Mennonite private school setting
  • Watch an interpreter spin wool/learn to quilt a comforter
  • Make a handkerchief toy ("kodda pup")
  • Play traditional Mennonite circle games
  • Optional sleigh/wagon ride with horses (weather permitting)
  • Learn to use and handle wood working tools.
