Mennonite Heritage Village announces establishment of its new Mennonite Family History Centre, in which visitors and area residents can receive training and assistance in researching and documenting their ancestry.

The Genealogy Research Lab and Classroom features:

  • 10 Internet-connected computers, pre-loaded with the Grandma 5 database,
  • Brother’s Keeper and
  • Personal Ancestral File;
  • An instructor computer, with projector and screen for training purposes;
  • Formal classes and informal training in the use of computers, software and the internet to research and document family history;
  • Computers on which people can work on their own Family History, with or without Volunteer assistance;
  • A Research Library;
  • An opportunity for researchers/volunteers to
  • Contribute, verify or update their family information,
  • enter information from other sources, or
  • add narrative, anecdotal information and photographs
  • into a local database.

In due course, the information gathered by the Mennonite Family History Centre is expected to be made available online, or for purchase. Watch for links to such information on our website.

Our purpose is not to compete with other projects such as Grandma, but rather to build on and complement such resources. As time and circumstances permit, we hope to facilitate establishment of a network of volunteers across Canada (and perhaps some states) who will – in a coordinated, proactive and timely fashion – gather and remit local, historical or other information for inclusion in the global Mennonite Genealogical Knowledgebase.

Call or email now to enquire about training, use of the classroom and its resources, and volunteer opportunities.
